Brightonwoods Orchard is owned by Bill and Judith Stone and Paula Puntenney. Started in 1950 as a hobby farm, it has grown to fifteen acres of apples with over 200 varieties on semi-dwarf trees. Their emphasis is on preserving heirloom varieties – both commercial and non-commercial, and propagating new varieties developed through University research. We invite you to attend the field day at this interesting orchard.
How to propagate trees will be discussed at the field day. Budding is becoming the method of choice by nurserymen in propagating fruit trees. Budding is usually done in the late summer and takes less time than grafting. At the field day, Bill Meyer from Kickapoo Orchard and All About Apples will be on-hand to demonstrate.
Located on a Wisconsin Rustic Road near the Bong Recreation Area, the orchard is open seven days a week in the fall. Products include apples, apple cider, caramel apples, pumpkins, gourds, Indian corn, honey, jams and jellies, and other items.
Brightonwoods’ apple cider is processed with ultraviolet light. Bill Stone will give a cider making demonstration and explain this process.
Brightonwoods Orchard also sells at farmers’ markets in Racine, Kenosha, and Milwaukee Counties, including the WAGA Milwaukee County Winter Farmers Market.
In 2001, Brightonwoods Orchard started an on-site winery through a collaborative agreement. AEppelTreow (Apple True) Winery features sparkling ciders and fruit wines. A tour of the winery will conclude the field day.
